Body Image Issues: Not Just for Women Anymore

Jun 13th, 2008 | By Leslie Fox | Category: News

Philadelphia, PA – The house has been reserved and the rent paid. A trip to Wal-Mart has procured the requisite oversized towels and horseshoe set. Only one thing remains to be done before Joe Canella packs his bags and leaves for the South Jersey shore next weekend. He needs to lose 25 lbs and maybe tone up the guns a bit.

Joe, a self described realist, knows he has his work cut out for him. “25 lbs is a good amount of weight to drop in a few days, but I think I can do it. When I got strep throat in high school I lost like 15 lbs in a week, and all I did was lie in bed and eat ice cream. I’m sure I can do better than that if I put my mind to it.”

Most doctors recommend that weight loss come gradually as a result of reduced caloric intake and increased exercise. Joe plans to use some diet pills that he got at the gas station, along with a sack of pork rinds, which he remembers as diet food from the Atkins craze.

“I got these pills. They come in two flavors, the ones with chicks on them and one with dudes. I went with the one with the chicks on them; I figured they might be extra strength given how the ladies tend to obsess about this stuff. I also got the these pork rinds, they’re not as good as chips, but they still go pretty good with a hoagie, and sacrifices gotta be made.” Said Joe of his purchases.

Exercise is also key part of Joe’s weight loss plan. On the first day of Joe’s diet regime he completed 9 pushups and 15 crunches in twelve minutes. He followed this with an extensive cool down period involving 12 miller lights and 6 innings of televised baseball before nodding off on his couch.

“Yeah, I didn’t quite hit my exercise goals on the first day, but I always start out easy, don’t want pull something. Besides that’s what I got these pills for.” Said a visibly relaxed Joe.

As of press time Joe has gained 3 lbs.

  1. Society often forgets that men have body image issues just like women. Like women, a man should not be judged on their physical appearance alone. The Genuine Men Project believes that it is the sum of a man is not his six pack, but how he faces his challenges and carries his experiences. Men of great character and strength come from all walks of life and society needs to start recognizing men as more than eye candy, sugar daddies, or good-for-nothings and start bringing to our attention men who are good role models for us all. We can all learn from the stories of men.

  2. Yeah, come to think about it that Bruno broad’s probably right about somethin.
I’m a pretty good role model… you know… for the kids.

  3. As a good for nothing piece of eye candy I ask that everyone keep their expectations within reason.
